About us

The Michael & Betty Little Trust is a UK based, independent family trust that supports a broad range of charitable organisations in the UK and overseas. The Trust does not actively fundraise and is configured to distribute grants through the careful management of its existing resources. We make grants where we can support activities that we judge might make a positive impact, and where our contributions might make a difference.

The Trust is always happy to receive applications for grants so, if you are an organisation that needs some financial assistance, please read our guidelines to check that you meet our criteria and then complete the application process.

Our history

The Michael & Betty Little Trust was founded just before Michael Little died in 2004. The Michael and Betty Little Trust (MBLT) was established by the children of the couple, in line with their father’s wishes, to make charitable grants from his estate.  Michael Little was a successful civil engineer who founded his practice in 1954. In their lives, both Michael and Betty had supported many local charities and causes, inspiring their children to continue the tradition. The descendants of Michael and Betty have continued to top up the fund from their own careers in engineering and technology.

Purpose and methods

The majority of our grants are made to charitable organisations and other worthy causes that one or more trustee has discovered, researched and managed. We like to form relationships with these organisations and typically visit or have telephone conversations prior to a grant application being made. We then support our applicants with their grant application.

The majority of our grants awarded are to give unrestricted funds.

We meet once a quarter and consider new applications at these meetings. Occasionally we will agree to approve a grant application between meetings via email. All trustees are responsible for approving a grant application.

We are a small operation, with no paid staff. We prefer to discover our own opportunities to provide financial support, often through or alongside other registered charities. We do not seek or accept any funding from sources outside the family.
